Depart your Malang hotel
by jeep around midnight
A 4WD jeep picks you up from your hotel in central Malang around midnight. You use the same jeep for the whole tour and can rest during the roughly 2.5-hour drive to Bromo. Because Bromo gets very crowded at sunrise, the tour leaves early to secure parking near the viewpoint.
Watch the Mount Bromo sunrise from King Kong Hill
Your driver takes you off-road to King Kong Hill or Mount Penanjakan. While waiting for sunrise in the cool mountain air, you can buy warm coffee or tea and fried bananas (at your own expense). As the sun rises behind Mount Semeru, capture Mount Bromo, Mount Batok and the sea of clouds below changing from darkness to gold.
Cross the Sea of Sand and climb to Bromo Crater
After sunrise, descend to the Sea of Sand, a desert-like area formed by ancient eruptions. After about 45 minutes by jeep and a short walk, reach the rim of Bromo Crater to view the smoking volcano, the caldera and Pura Luhur Poten temple, a symbol of Tengger Hindu culture. Depending on the schedule, you may also stop at places such as Widodaren and Teletubbies Hill.
You return to Malang around 11:00 AM.
