We had a very amazing and adventurous night tour with Kengo! Kengo was great, very helpful and nice and he found many creatures even though there was a chance in the weather pattern and coconut crabs would hide (he still found one!). We saw a lot of hermit crabs, a coconut crab, lots of insects, a snake and even a scorpion! Kengo knew his way around in the jungle and we never felt unsafe once. We were a group from children to seniors including Japanese and Westeners (us :D ) and everyone enjoyed the tour! Also, Kengo’s English was very good and he also explained things several times if you couldn’t hear (because of the rain and wind). Even though we were heavily soaked because of the rain, we had a lot of fun! The rain made it even more adventurous! On the way back, he even dropped us directly in front of our accommodation. If we ever come back to Iriomote, we will book this tour again! And hopefully with Kengo! :)

We had a great tour and excellent guide. He found several coconut crabs, other crabs, frogs, a firefly and a scorpion (and yes, we love spotting critters). Gazing at the stars and seeing the milky way was a very relaxing activity.

We hebben een super leuke avond gehad. We hebben meerdere dieren gespot, waaronder twee kokosnoot krabben. Onze gids was super enthousiast, wat erg aanstekelijk werkte. De tour was grotendeels in Japans, maar hij nam zeker de tijd om ons ook in het Engels te woord te staan. Een geslaagde avond.

On this tour of about 1 hour 30 minutes, walk through the jungle of Iriomote Island at night in search of nocturnal wildlife, then gaze at a starry sky with little light pollution. With a local guide and a flashlight, look for island creatures such as coconut crabs, hermit crabs and the Ryukyu scops owl. In an open area, your guide shares local legends and points out seasonal constellations. Photos taken by the guide are provided free of charge, and the tour welcomes ages 3 to 65, making it a good fit for families.

Depart from Uehara Port
and head into the night jungle

Gather at Uehara Port on Iriomote Island and drive about 15 minutes to the jungle. Known as the 'Galápagos of the Orient', Iriomote comes alive after dark as nocturnal animals fill its subtropical mangroves and forests. If you are staying in the Uehara area, free pickup and drop-off are available.

Search for nocturnal animals by flashlight

Walk through the jungle at night with your guide for about an hour in search of the coconut crab, known as the largest land arthropod in the world. Spotting this master of camouflage takes a little luck, but the search itself is half the fun. You may also come across giant hermit crabs, the rare Ryukyu scops owl and unique tropical insects. Flashlights and shoes are included.

See a sky full of stars from an open area

With almost no light pollution, Iriomote offers views of the Milky Way stretching from horizon to horizon on clear nights. Your guide shares island legends and introduces the seasonal constellations.

Your guide captures moments from the jungle trek and under the night sky, and all photo data is provided free of charge. After the tour, drive about 15 minutes back to Uehara Port.
