Bali Mount Agung Sunrise Trekking Tour with Hotel Pickup

Great experience, once in a lifetime, but don't underestimate the difficulty! Driver Ijonk was great and the guide, Gede was very knowledgeable and patient.

We had a great experience hiking Mt. Agung via Besakih-Temple. Don’t underestimate the strong elevation though! Our guide Wayan brought us up and down safely. It took us ~3,5h (with breaks on every checkpoint) to get to Pos 5 at 2:15am, where we had to wait for >2 hours until we could go up to the summit for sunrise. We were one of the faster groups, multiple groups did not make it in time. It was freezing cold while waiting but Wayan made a fire and offered coffee/tea. Bring warm clothes! He wasn’t doing smalltalk but answered all our questions and kept us informed about our schedule. He kept a good pace and checked up on us during more difficult passages. He gave us crampons, which we were so thankful for in the slippery sand! Summit back to camp we only took short breaks and needed ~3,5h. Our driver Suarez was punctual, super nice and told us what we had to expect. He also brought us lots of chips, cookies, etc. & drinks to take for breakfast. The drive was relaxed and safe.

The hike itself was fantastic, but my guide did not want to be there. Walked 10 meters ahead of me for the whole 12 hrs, didnt check in once and probably wouldn't have cared if I felt off the cliff. Instead he was busy on the walkie talkie or checking/sending voice notes for hours, which was quite annoying. The hike itself is absolutely amazing, steep but manageable going up, but more brutal towards the last 2,5 hrs going down, as it is quite slippery all the way down and heavy on the knees. If you have general good fitness definitely doable, but bring poles, the tour only provided 1 pole (instead of 2 as mentioned in their programme). Transport was well organized, but was a bit scary with the driver on his phone in the middle of the night driving up the serpentine road to the temple.

My local guide Teka really take care of me very well. Since I’m a solo female traveler, he always say “take your time” when I need to take a break. I used to think the local guide won’t spend too much time talking to clients due to potential language barriers. But Teka keep chatting with me almost the whole way. He also help me take many photos proactively which I rarely requested it. It’s really helpful having such a supportive guide for climbing mount Agung. 10/10 recommend it!

The hike is difficult, but definitely worth it. The transport went smoothly, and the driver was extremely nice. Gede is the best.
