Tokyo Machida Samurai Swordplay & Archery Experience

Enter the world of the samurai
with a master's demonstration and sword lecture

After gathering at the dojo, you watch a demonstration by the 7th-dan Toyama-ryu master up close (5 min) and attend a lecture on the history of the Japanese sword and the samurai (30 min). Then you change into a training uniform (10 min) and get ready for practice.

Learn swordsmanship through iai forms and sparring

In sword practice (30 min), you learn how to handle a sword and dojo etiquette, and master correct forms and swings with an imitation sword. After a photo session (10 min), you spar with a partner using practice swords (gekiken, 20 min) to experience combat distance and practical movement.

Finish with archery and a cutting check

Try archery with a bow used in real yabusame (20 min), then take on test cutting to check that your blade cuts at the correct angle (30 min). You also attempt an advanced move of cutting multiple targets while moving. After a completion ceremony (5 min), you change and the class ends (10 min).

At the dojo you can hold an antique matchlock gun, and traditional yabusame costumes are on display.
