Kyaraben is the cute character bento that Japanese families make at home. In an indoor studio in Akasaka, central Tokyo, you will shape rice and side dishes into the face of a panda, a Shiba Inu or a seasonal special character. An English-speaking instructor guides you step by step with easy-to-follow visuals and helps you right at your side, so no cooking experience is needed. Take photos of your finished bento with fun props, then sit down in the studio and enjoy eating it. With a maximum of 12 participants, the class is also a great fit for families traveling with children.

Make a kyaraben character bento
at a studio in Akasaka
This is a 2-hour hands-on class where you make a kyaraben, the character bento found in Japanese homes, from start to finish. You spend about 1 hour 30 minutes making your bento and about 30 minutes eating it. The class is taught in English, and Japanese is available on request.
Choose one design from a panda, a Shiba Inu or a seasonal special character. After booking, select your design and the operator will confirm it.
Learn about Japanese bento culture with a quiz

The class begins with a short, fun quiz about Japanese bento culture. You will learn why bento is part of everyday life in Japan before you start cooking.
Make colorful side dishes and a character face

The instructor explains every step in English with easy-to-understand visuals and helps you right at your side. First you make small, colorful side dishes one by one, then complete the character face with rice and decorations. Children aged 6 to 15 make their own bento, while children under 6 make one bento together with a parent.
Take photos of your bento and enjoy it

Pack everything into your bento box and take photos using props. Staff can help you with photos. Afterward, sit down in the studio and eat the bento you made.
※ The studio is indoors, so the class runs regardless of rain or heat.
