Kabuki for Beginners:
Tokyo's Iconic Traditional Performance
The Kabukiza Theatre offers a genuine taste of Japanese traditional arts in a relatively accessible format, even for beginners. The vibrant costumes, makeup, stage transitions, and live musical accompaniment create a lively atmosphere in every scene.
Subtitles are available for certain performances, helping you understand the story even if you don't speak Japanese. While Kabuki's unique style and acting may seem unfamiliar, following the main scenes allows you to appreciate the performance, making it a highly satisfying introduction to traditional theater.
Enjoy Multiple Acts with One Ticket

Kabukiza Theatre typically runs daytime and evening performances, each lasting about 4 hours. Importantly, multiple acts are presented sequentially within a single performance time, rather than concurrently.
Intermissions are often included, allowing you to comfortably enjoy the long performance. A single visit offers a diverse experience, including dance, historical dramas, contemporary plays, and modern Kabuki. This is especially appealing for travelers new to Japanese traditional performance, providing a broader experience of Kabuki's various styles than focusing on a single genre.

Performance Information

The Kabukiza Theatre features a different program each month. Even within Kabukiza performances, the atmosphere can vary significantly depending on the time of year, making it fun to enjoy different works each season.
March Performance Information
11:00 AM (Daytime Performance)
The Return of Iwafuji, Iwafuji Gathering Bones (加賀見山再岩藤 骨寄せの岩藤)
The March daytime performance centers around a historical drama with a strong ghost story element. It unfolds with power struggles in the Daiga domain, the vengeful spirit of Iwafuji, a maid who sided with the villains, rumors of the princess's illness and curse, and the schemes of forces seeking to seize power. Expect Kabuki's unique stagecraft and eerie productions, such as scenes of praying at a grave and Iwafuji's bones gathering and her vengeful spirit appearing.
4:30 PM (Evening Performance)
The Festive Gobiki Celebrating Spring (壽春鳳凰祭)
A celebratory dance named after the phoenix, the emblem of the Kabukiza. First performed to commemorate the opening of the 5th Kabukiza (2014), it is a vibrant group dance with themes of the beginning of spring, the prosperity of Kabuki, and the transmission to the next generation. It's more about enjoying the symbolism and festive atmosphere than a heavy plot.
Three Kichisa and the White Waves (三人吉三巴白浪)
One of the most famous thief plays in Kabuki. Three different thieves all share the name Kichisa, and the story begins as they form a brotherhood over an incident involving money. The story escalates into robbery, murder, and a chase, culminating in a scene where they reunite on a snowy night. With a strong narrative blending crime, melodrama, and tragedy, it is particularly impressive for those who enjoy story-driven performances.
