The History of Sainte-Chapelle

Commissioned by King Louis IX, Sainte-Chapelle was constructed in just seven years, from 1242 to 1248. A prime example of Gothic architecture, it was originally built as a royal chapel for the king and his family.

The interior of Sainte-Chapelle is divided into two floors. The lower chapel, at the entrance, was for the general public, while the upper floor, accessed by stairs, was reserved for royalty and the elite.
