Start at St. Peter's Square
and explore the Vatican's great basilica in depth
Meet your guide at the meeting point near the colonnade of St. Peter's Square to start the tour. Stroll the square while hearing about its grand architecture, then pass through security to the basilica. The tour lasts about 1 hour 45 minutes and ends in St. Peter's Square.
Climb the dome by stairs for views over Rome
Climb the stairs up the basilica's dome and admire the mosaics inside it up close. Continue to the balcony at the top for a panoramic view of Rome's landmarks, including the Colosseum and the Pantheon. The dome can only be climbed by stairs; no elevator is used.
Admire the artworks inside the basilica
Come back down into the basilica and explore an interior decorated with colorful marble, golden ceilings and intricate mosaics. See works by Renaissance and Neoclassical artists, including Michelangelo's Pietà, and learn why the basilica took 150 years to complete.
See St. Peter's tomb in the underground grottoes
Descend into the grottoes beneath the basilica to see the tomb of St. Peter and the papal tombs. Touch the walls of the original basilica built in the 4th century and admire beautiful frescoes.
※ If the grottoes or parts of the basilica are closed, your guide will adjust the itinerary to highlight other areas and artworks inside the basilica.
