Franz Josef Glacier Heli-Hike Tour

Gear up at the Glacier Base Building
and set off

The tour starts at the Glacier Base Building in Franz Josef township. Here you will be fitted with all the glacier gear you need, including crampons, boots, waterproofs and a helmet, and receive a safety briefing. Then take a short walk to the helipad and board your helicopter.

Fly over rainforest and glacial valleys

Your helicopter flies over rainforest, jagged peaks and glacial valleys before landing high on Franz Josef Glacier. The helicopter transfer between the valley and the glacier takes about 4 minutes each way.

Walk on the glacier with your guide

Once you land, your expert guide helps you get ready for the hike. Put on your crampons and safety gear, step onto the ice and explore the ever-changing landscape of this fast-moving glacier for up to 2.5 hours.

Discover towering seracs, deep crevasses and blue ice caves along the way. The route changes with glacier conditions, and your guide adjusts it to suit the group's abilities. After the hike, fly back to the valley by helicopter.
