Choose and wear a kimono
in a traditional Gion machiya
Rental Kimono Okamoto Gion Shop is located inside a machiya, a traditional Kyoto-style townhouse. With its wooden architecture, tatami rooms, and peaceful garden, you can feel the atmosphere of old Kyoto before you even step outside. The shop is right by Kodaiji Temple and Maruyama Park, and Yasaka Shrine, Hanamikoji, Ninenzaka, and Sannenzaka are all within walking distance.
Pick from more than 1,000 kimonos

Okamoto has been renting kimonos for nearly 200 years and offers over 1,000 kimonos, from classic Japanese patterns and bright, photogenic colors to modern designs. Premium plans with elegant embroidery are available, as well as furisode, homongi, hakama, men's kimonos, and plus sizes.
The kimono, obi belt, traditional bag, zori sandals, and tabi socks are included, and experienced staff help you coordinate and put on your outfit. Choosing and dressing usually takes less than an hour. Hair styling is available separately if you wish.
Take photos inside the machiya and garden

At the Gion shop, you can take photos in your kimono against the traditional wooden interior, tatami rooms, and garden. Before heading out, you can hand your smartphone to the staff and ask them to take a few pictures. An outdoor photo shoot with a professional photographer can be requested at the shop on the day, subject to availability.
Stroll Gion and Higashiyama in your kimono

Once dressed, walk through Kodaiji Temple and Maruyama Park, stroll along Ninenzaka and Sannenzaka, or continue toward Yasaka Shrine and Hanamikoji. Traditional townhouses, temples, and stone-paved lanes make beautiful photo backdrops.
Okamoto operates 7 shops near Kyoto's main sightseeing areas. For an extra fee, you can return your rental to another Okamoto shop, return it the next day, or use the hotel return service within Kyoto.
※ Admission to temples, shrines, and other attractions and transportation are not included.
