This activity was so much fun! It was our first time doing this and Niels helped answer all our questions and walked through the instructions well. We rappelled down 6 times, and one was a 60 ft drop next to the falls. The water was COLD but the wet suits helped. It was a great activity to end our vacation. Thanks to Niels for being an amazing guide!

My husband and I LOVED our day canyoning! We had never heard of the activity before until our white water rafting guide mentioned it to us. It was a moderate hike in the beginning (carrying your gear and wetsuits), then we slid down the rocks and/or rappelled down the canyons...and it was a thrill! Mateo was an excellent guide and we felt quite well taken care of! I recommend this activity to all. My husband conquered his fear of heights pretty handily after this excursion. We also loved that Mateo took photos and sent them to us free of charge after the activity. His kindness can't be beat!

Highlights

This half-day introductory tour in Heart Creek Canyon on the outskirts of Canmore is designed for first-time canyoners. After learning rappelling techniques from your guide, you start with short rappels and build confidence as the drops gradually get higher on the way down the canyon. You pass through two different canyon sections and finish with a wet rappel of about 18–21 m beside a waterfall, plus a fun natural slide below the falls. Tours run in small groups of up to 8 people, and a thick canyoning wetsuit and all technical gear are provided.

Meet at the Heart Creek Trail parking lot
for a safety briefing

Heart Creek Canyon lies on the outskirts of Canmore, less than 30 minutes from Banff, making it the closest canyoning spot to both towns. When you meet at the Heart Creek Trail parking lot, your guide gives a safety briefing of about 30 minutes.

Hike up to the canyon carrying your gear

Carry your gear, including your wetsuit and harness, and hike for about 1 hour to the canyon. In summer, a T-shirt and shorts or pants are recommended for the hike, and you will wear the same shoes in the canyon.

Build your skills step by step with short rappels

Upper Heart Canyon is an ideal place to learn and practice rappelling. You start with short, confidence-building rappels, the drops get gradually higher as you move downstream, and you spend about 2 hours 30 minutes canyoning through two different canyon sections.

Finish with a waterfall rappel and a natural slide

The finale is a wet rappel of about 18–21 m down a waterfall. There is a fun natural slide below the falls, and a hiking route around the final waterfall is also available. After canyoning, you walk about 30 minutes back to the parking lot.

Look for the Bow Valley Canyon Tour meeting sign. Heart Creek Canyon is about 17 km east of the town of Canmore, roughly a 10-minute drive from Canmore and 25 minutes from Banff. Take the Heart Creek Trail exit from the highway. Meeting times are 9:00 AM, 10:30 AM, 12:00 PM and 1:30 PM, depending on your booking.
