Meet your expert guide at the Cave and Basin parking lot near the heart of Banff to start the tour. Your guide chooses the best viewing spot based on the season and the evening sky forecast.
Find dark skies with a scenic drive and a short walk
Drive through Rocky Mountain scenery, then take a short walk to a dark-sky location. Along the way, learn about the history of the area and the cultural significance of the night sky. Headlamps are provided, and ice spikes are provided in winter.
Learn the constellations and wait for the northern lights
As darkness falls, take in the crystal-clear mountain sky filled with stars from the viewpoint. Your guide points out constellations, planets and other celestial highlights and shares star myths and legends from different cultures. Northern lights sightings are rare and unpredictable, but your guide monitors conditions closely, and you may see them when conditions are right.
Capture night photos against the mountains and sky
With your guide's help, take night photos with the glowing sky and dramatic mountain scenery as a backdrop. At the end of the tour, drive back to Banff and finish at the starting point.
