What is Taiwan's transportation card?

Currently, there are four main types of transportation cards in Taiwan: Easy Card (悠遊卡/Yo-yo card), iPASS (一卡通/I-pass), icash (愛金卡/Ai Jin Card), and happy cash (有錢卡/Youqian Card). Among these, EasyCard, which appeared first, has a relatively large number of users, but iPASS, which started a partnership with electronic payment service LINE Pay in 2018, is growing rapidly.

What are the advantages of iPASS?

The Taiwan iPASS transportation card started service in 2008 with the opening of the Kaohsiung Metro. Since then, through partnerships with various companies, it can now be used for public transportation and convenience stores throughout Taiwan, as well as movie theaters, marts, restaurants, and tourist attractions.

The advantages of iPASS are that it is convenient because payment is made immediately when it is placed on the reader, there is no limit to the number of uses or period of use on the card, so it can be recycled, and there is a public transportation discount (20%).

How to use iPASS

1. Charge at the MRT station:
The first way to easily charge your iPASS is to use the automatic transportation card charging machines located at each MRT station. Also, this method is a good way to check your balance, so even if you are not planning to charge, it is a good way to check your balance.

* How to charge iPASS:
1. Place the iPASS card in the appropriate location. Then the machine will automatically recognize it and show the balance on the screen. (If you only want to check your balance, skip this step and retrieve your card.)
2. Insert the amount you want to charge.
3. Once you have inserted the desired amount, press the 'next' button at the bottom of the screen to start charging.
When a message appears that charging is complete, remove the card.

2. Charging at a convenience store:
Charging at a convenience store is even easier. Ask the convenience store cashier to charge it, and pay the desired amount in cash.
The method of purchasing goods at a convenience store and paying is also the same method of placing the card on the same reader and processing it, so you can enjoy the convenience store to your heart's content without worrying about change.
