Boasting Japan's Highest Onsen Water Volume:
Kamado Jigoku (Hell) Onsen
A must-see onsen retreat in Beppu! Visit the most famous Kamado Jigoku Onsen among the seven 'Hell' onsens. The name 'Kamado Jigoku' originates from the practice of cooking rice with approximately 90°C onsen steam to offer to the gods during the grand festival of Kamado Hachimangu Shrine. From the 1st Mud Hell, where clay melts and boils at 90°C, to the 2nd Hell, where 100°C steam erupts between rocks, the 3rd Hell with its cobalt blue color due to dissolved non-crystalline silica, the 4th Mud Hell where underground bedrock melts and erupts, the 5th Hell where you can enjoy Mr. Honda's Hell Steam Show made famous on TV, and the 6th Hell with its dark brown color due to dissolved iron components!
You can enjoy every corner of Kamado Jigoku. Embark on a tour of the six hells and fall in love with the charm of onsens that boast various colors depending on the composition of the onsen water.
Introducing the Map of Kamado Jigoku

Kamado Jigoku Onsen offers various attractions from area No. 1 to No. 6. The biggest charm is that you can enjoy various hell onsens in one place!
1. Kamado Jigoku No. 1:
No. 1 is a brownish mud hot spring hell. It was created by geothermal heat from the underground bedrock, and the color is made by various sticky clays melting down.
2. Kamado Jigoku No. 2:
Here, you'll find the Kamado Oni (demon), which can be said to be the mascot of Kamado Jigoku. Steam at 100°C gushes out from between the rocks.
3. Kamado Jigoku No. 3 (85 degrees):
A cobalt blue hell
The white substance is non-crystalline silica (a compound of silicon).
It is estimated to have formed over about 70 years as an onsen sediment.
4. Throat (Skin) Onsen:
Gokuraku No. 1 - Gokuraku No. 4 - This is where you can experience the onsen.
5. Kamado Jigoku No. 4:
No. 4 is a pool of 80°C hot mud hell.
The color of this pond is created by geothermal heat from the underground bedrock, and is characterized by various sticky muds melting down.
6. Kamado Jigoku No. 5:
A mysterious hell where the color of the pond changes
The color of this pond changes suddenly several times a year!
7. Kamado Jigoku No. 6:
A mud hot spring hell like No. 1 and No. 4. It used to be gray, but the color has changed every year to become what it is today.
I really recommend Kamado Jigoku No. 3

Kamado Jigoku No. 3 is a cobalt blue hell, and the reason for this light is non-crystalline silica. It is estimated to have formed over about 70 years as an onsen sediment.
